Auto Body Painting for Milliken

Pearl white on a double driveway at noon

Milliken’s driveways are a paint inspection. Three or four cars sit side by side in full sun, often two of them the same pearl white or the same silver, and a resprayed door that passed under shop lights shows its edge at noon when the family compares it with the car beside it. That is the standard a Milliken repaint has to meet, and it is a harder one than most shops admit. Pearl white is a three-stage colour whose tint changes with the thickness of the mid-coat; silver metallic flops light or dark depending on how the flake lies; black shows every scratch left in the prep.

The damage that brings these cars in is mostly small and local — a door skin dented at Pacific Mall, a bumper corner from a plaza curb, a quarter panel keyed at Milliken GO — which makes the paint job harder, not easier. Painting only the damaged panel invites a seam. The colour has to be carried into the panels on either side and faded out so there is no line for the eye to catch.

Every code has variants; daylight picks the right one

Every repaint starts with the paint code on the door jamb or under the hood, and every code has variants, because the factory adjusted the formula over the run. We mix the closest one, spray it on a test card, and hold it against your car in daylight before the car is masked. If it flops wrong, we adjust and spray again. Then the panel is prepped down to a sound edge, primed, and taken into the booth for base, pearl or metallic where the colour calls for it, and clear, with the adjacent panels blended in the same session.

The booth bakes the finish so it cures fully instead of drying in a garage, and that is what lets us back the paint with a lifetime warranty. It also means winter does not change the result; the car comes in cold and salty, gets washed, and the booth does the rest. The clear keeps hardening for a few weeks after you pick it up, so we will ask you to keep wax and brush washes off it for about a month.

Drop-off from Milliken, and what to expect at pick-up

Most Milliken customers drop the car on the way to work: Steeles west to the 404, two exits to Sheppard, and a second driver or the rental waiting at the counter. If the repaint is part of a claim the rental is arranged through your coverage before you arrive; if you are paying for it yourself, the estimate from your photos tells you how long the car will be here before you commit, and a single panel with a blend is usually a few days rather than a week.

When you come back, look at the car outside, in daylight, from three metres and then from arm’s length, and compare the repaired panel with its neighbours. That is the same test the driveway will apply. Bring the car back if anything reads wrong; the warranty is there to be used, and we would rather correct a panel than have you live with a seam.

Questions people ask

My car is pearl white. Will a repainted door look different from the fender beside it?

Not if the blend is done. Pearl white is the colour most likely to show a seam when a panel is painted in isolation, so the mid-coat is faded into the fender and the rear door and the whole run is cleared together. We test the mix on a card against your car first. Photograph the car in sun and in shade and send both; it tells us which variant of the code you have.

Can you paint only the scuffed corner of the bumper instead of the whole thing?

Sometimes. A corner scuff on a bumper with an edge or a body line nearby can be repaired and painted up to that line, and the result holds. On a smooth cover with no break the colour needs to fade out across the face, which is most of the bumper anyway. Send a photo of the whole bumper and one of the corner and the estimate will say which applies.

How soon can I take it through the car wash on Steeles?

Hand wash any time after you pick it up. The touchless washes are fine after a couple of weeks; the brush washes and any wax or sealant should wait about a month while the clear finishes hardening. After that, treat the repaired panel exactly like the rest of the car.
