When the car pulls toward the curb after a Steeles hit
A car that has taken a real hit on Steeles tells you before any measurement does. It pulls to one side on the straight run west past Warden. A door needs a shove to close. The gap between the hood and the fender is wider on one side than the other, and a tire wears its inside edge within weeks. Those are the signs that the structure moved — a rail, a strut tower, the rear body panel — and that the repair is about geometry before it is about paint.
Almost every car in a Milliken driveway is unibody: the body shell is the frame, and a rear-end from a truck at Steeles and Kennedy or a front-corner hit turning into the mall bends the shell, not a separate ladder underneath. The pickups and the work trucks from the industrial streets by Milliken GO are body-on-frame, and those get measured and pulled on the frame itself. Both come to the same bench; the procedures differ.
The first set of numbers is printed before a chain is attached
The car is anchored on the bench and measured against the manufacturer’s reference points, and that first set of numbers is printed and put in your file before a chain is attached. The pull is done in stages, with a measurement between each, because metal that has been pushed relaxes back a little when the load comes off. Where a rail is kinked past what a pull can restore, the damaged section is cut out and a new one welded in following the manufacturer’s procedure, with OEM structural parts, because these pieces are what direct the next crash around the cabin.
After the structure is back to specification the suspension is checked and the wheels aligned, and any radar or camera that sits on a moved panel may require recalibration. The final measurements go in the file next to the first set. That printout is the answer to the question every Milliken family asks at pick-up: is it as straight as it was.
Repair it, or write it off, and who decides
A hit hard enough to move structure usually passes the provincial reporting threshold, so it starts at a Collision Reporting Centre — Scarborough’s if it happened south of Steeles, Markham’s if north. Your insurance company is told within seven days. Under DCPD the damage you did not cause is paid by your own policy, and the adjuster weighs the repair cost plus what the wreck would fetch against the car’s actual cash value. There is no fixed percentage; an older family sedan from one of the Milliken subdivisions is written off sooner than a three-year-old crossover.
If the car cannot drive, it does not need to. We help arrange the tow from wherever it stopped on Steeles, and you name Sheppard and Don Mills as the destination, because in Ontario that is your call. The teardown and measurement happen here, the numbers go to the adjuster with photos, and if the car is a total loss you can still choose to keep it and settle for the value less salvage.
Questions people ask
Is unibody damage the same thing as frame damage?
On a modern car, yes. The rails, the rocker panels and the pillars are the frame, formed as one shell, so a bent rear rail after a rear-end on Steeles is frame damage even though there is no separate frame under the car. It is measured and pulled the same way; the difference is that the shell is stiffer in some places and softer in others by design.
My work pickup from the Milliken industrial blocks was hit in the box. Is a bent box floor frame damage?
Not by itself. On a body-on-frame truck the box bolts to the frame, so a creased box side or floor can be repaired or swapped without touching the rails — but a hit hard enough to fold the box has often nudged the frame too, so we measure the rear rails and check the box mounts before writing the estimate. If the rails read true, the box work is straightforward bolt-off repair.
Will it drive the same after the pull?
If the measurements match specification, yes, and you will have the before-and-after printout to show it. The alignment is done after the structural work, so the pull to one side goes away. Anything that still feels wrong on the drive back up Steeles is a reason to bring it straight back.
