All day at Guildwood GO
West Hill commutes two ways. One is the drive up Morningside to the 401 each morning. The other is the walk or the short drive to Guildwood GO, where the car sits in the lot from seven in the morning until after six in a row of cars whose owners are all late for the same train. Long-stay lots are where scratches come from: a bag dragged along a door, a bike pedal, a key held the wrong way, a bumper corner from the car that squeezed in next to you and squeezed out again. You do not see it happen and you notice it under the lot lights on the way home.
The other commuter stream is Kingston Road itself. The plaza lots along it are angled and shallow, so pulling out means turning sharply while the car beside you is doing the same, and the trade is a scrape down the rear quarter from a bumper corner or a mirror. The big-box aprons at Lawrence and Morningside add the shopping-cart run, which leaves a long horizontal line at exactly cart height on a door or a fender.
The scratch’s depth, not its length, sets the repair
A nail edge drawn gently along the mark settles the first question: gliding over means the scratch is in the clear coat and can be polished, or wet-sanded and polished, out — usually the same day, with no paint involved. Catching means the scratch has gone through the clear into colour, and polishing will only thin the clear around it; the panel needs to be sanded, primed where primer shows, painted and blended into the panels beside it. If you can see grey or bare metal in the bottom of the scratch, it has reached primer or steel and the repair is a refinish without question, because that metal will rust from the bottom of the line outward.
Key scratches are almost always the third kind, and they tend to run across two or three panels, so the refinish covers the run and blends into the panel at each end. Cart marks on a plastic bumper are often the first kind. Photos taken in low, angled light let our estimator tell the difference without a visit.
- Clear-coat scratches polished out, no paint
- Scratches into colour refinished and blended
- Primer or metal showing means a full refinish
- Lifetime warranty on any refinished panel
Drop it on the way to work
The distance from West Hill matters more for a small job than a big one, because nobody wants to make a forty-kilometre round trip for a polish. So the estimate comes from photos, and we book the work for a day when we can finish it, so a polished scratch is a drop-off in the morning and a pickup in the afternoon. A refinish is a few days, and if the scratch is a claim — a keyed car is a comprehensive claim on your own policy, with your deductible — a rental through your coverage starts on your drop-off day. Deliberate damage is worth reporting to police for the record even when the shop does not need it.
If you have a second scratch, a cart mark and a scuffed corner, send photos of all of them. Doing three small things while the car is here once is the sensible way to do it.
Questions people ask
The line on my door only shows when the sun hits it at an angle. Is that worth fixing?
A mark that shows only when the light crosses it at an angle is almost always in the clear coat, and that is the cheapest moment to deal with it — a machine polish removes it entirely. Left alone it does no harm to the metal, but every automatic wash adds neighbours until the door reads grey in sunlight. It is the one scratch job where waiting costs appearance rather than money.
Can a scratch on a plastic bumper be polished?
If it has not gone through the clear, yes, and bumper scuffs from cart corners often have not. If the mark is white or grey, the colour is gone and the corner needs a refinish, which on a bumper is a smaller job than on a door.
The lease return is booked for April. Which of these marks will the inspection charge for?
The rule of thumb most inspections apply is that a small mark a card can cover, which has not broken the colour, passes as normal wear, while anything deeper or crossing a panel edge is charged at the lessor’s rate. A pre-return visit that polishes the shallow ones and refinishes the real ones costs less than that. Send photos of each mark and we will split the list into leave and fix.
