Morningside up to the 401 and back down
The road most West Hill bumpers get hit on is Morningside. It climbs from Kingston Road through Lawrence and Ellesmere, past the campus and the Pan Am Centre, to the 401 ramps, and every one of those lights stacks traffic in the evening. The tap from behind at the Ellesmere light, or on the ramp when the merge does not open, is the most common bumper job we get from here. Kingston Road is the other, in its stop-and-go stretch between Morningside and Lawrence where the plaza exits and the bus stops keep the lane speed changing. The 401 itself adds the harder version at the Morningside and Port Union on-ramps, where a car joining at forty meets one already at a hundred.
Bumper covers on modern cars are designed to look untouched after all this, and from three metres away they often do. The energy has gone into the absorber and the beam behind them, and those are what we take the cover off to look at.
Torn tabs and crushed sensor pockets are the line between repair and replace
A plastic cover that is scuffed, cracked in an open area or split at a corner can usually be repaired: the crack is ground out, welded or bonded from behind with reinforcement, filled, primed, and refinished in your colour. A cover that is torn through a mounting tab, crushed at the sensor pockets or missing a piece is replaced, because a repair there will not hold and the sensors will not sit true. Behind it, the foam absorber is replaced if it is compressed, the beam is replaced if it is bent, and the brackets and clips are replaced rather than persuaded back into place.
The repair-or-replace question is answered honestly on the estimate. Your insurance company may prefer the cheaper of the two; where the choice affects how the bumper protects you next time, we say so. Where the estimate has been written for an aftermarket cover, you can ask for OEM and pay the difference, and on cars with radar in the bumper we recommend it. After any bumper work, parking sensors, rear cameras and radar units may require recalibration, and we do not hand a car back with a warning light on the dash.
- Cover repaired where plastic and mounts allow, replaced where not
- Absorber, beam and brackets inspected with the cover off
- OEM requested where sensors live in the bumper
- Recalibration arranged where the car needs it
Windrows, curbs and the February bumper
From late December through March the bumper work from West Hill changes character. The plows leave a windrow across every driveway mouth on the bungalow streets, and a cold, hard one is enough to crack the lower lip of a front cover or pull the fog-light trim out. Kingston Road’s hill to Highland Creek and Morningside through the park both ice before the flats, and a slow slide into a curb takes the corner of the cover and sometimes the bracket behind it. Then comes the pothole run in March and April on Lawrence and Kingston Road, which tears lower valances loose.
None of these need the car to come up Morningside for a look. Photos of the corner, the whole front and the underside if you can safely get them are enough for a written estimate the same business day, and the rental, if the job is a claim, is timed to your drop-off.
Questions people ask
The bumper looks fine but the parking sensors give false alerts since a tap. What is going on?
A sensor pushed a few millimetres out of its pocket, or a bracket behind the cover bent enough to change its angle, will do exactly that. The cover comes off, the mounts are checked, and the sensors are reseated and, if the car requires it, recalibrated. Do not ignore it; the same hit can have compressed the absorber.
Can I keep driving with a cracked bumper cover until spring?
A cracked cover that is still attached is usually safe to drive on. A cover that is hanging or dragging is not, and the wind on the 401 will finish tearing it off. If it is loose, tape it or take it off, and send us photos so we can order the parts before you come.
Is a bumper tap in traffic worth a claim?
If the other driver hit you from behind, it is a not-at-fault claim through your own insurance company under DCPD and usually costs you nothing. If you were the one who tapped, the repair is on your collision coverage with your deductible, and for a small scuff it may cost less to pay directly. The photo estimate gives you the number to decide with.
