Scratch Repair in Whitby

Multiple scratches marring a pale blue front bumper near the headlight

Trailer season at the marina

The first warm Saturday in May, the ramp at Port Whitby is a queue of pickups and SUVs with boats behind them, and by noon someone has jackknifed a trailer into their own rear quarter. That is the signature Whitby scratch: a curved scrape from the trailer frame or winch post, usually through the clear and into the colour, sometimes with a dent under it. The marina lot itself is gravel in places and throws stone into rockers and door bottoms. Heydenshore and the waterfront trail add low posts and the corner of a car-topper. The season ends in October with the same trailers going the other way.

The rest of the year is quieter and more familiar. The older streets around the Four Corners are lined with cedar hedges that put fine parallel lines down the side of a car that eases over for a delivery truck. The GO lot produces the key line and the cart. The Whitby Mall corridor and the Taunton Road plazas leave a stripe of someone else’s paint on a bumper corner. Different causes, one question.

Three depths, three different jobs

Every scratch is one of three things. The shallow kind sits in the clear coat: it looks bad in sunlight, catches nothing under a fingernail, and comes out with compound and a polisher in under an hour. The middle kind has cut through the clear into the colour, so the line reads lighter than the panel and a nail drops into it; that is a refinish, because no polish can put colour back. The deep kind shows primer or bare metal, and on a rocker or a door bottom it is a deadline as much as a repair — one salted winter on the 401 and the bright line is a brown one.

Refinishing means the panel is sanded, primed where needed, sprayed in a colour tinted to your car rather than to the code, and blended into the panel beside it. A trailer scrape that crosses from the quarter onto the bumper cover is two surfaces, steel and plastic, prepped differently and painted together.

  • Clear-coat marks polished out, no paint involved
  • Colour-deep lines refinished and blended into the neighbouring panel
  • Primer and metal sealed before the salt gets a season at them
  • Paint transfer from another car usually polishes off completely

On the way to work, not a special trip

A good share of Whitby works west of Whitby. The 401 to a job in Scarborough, North York or Markham passes our exit, and for a polish that changes the whole calculation: pull off at the 404, leave the car, spend the hour in Fairview Mall next door, and collect it on the way home. A refinish needs a few days for booth time and cure, and we book it for a week you can spare the car, with the rental through your coverage if the scratch is going through a claim.

Whether it should go through a claim depends on who did it. A key line across three panels in the GO lot is vandalism, a comprehensive claim with no fault against you and usually worth filing. A scrape you put on your own trailer frame is collision coverage, with your deductible, and usually is not. Our estimator writes the estimate either way and you choose with the number in hand.

Questions people ask

I scraped the rear quarter on my own boat trailer at the Port Whitby ramp. Is that a claim?

It is collision coverage — you hit something — so your deductible applies and nobody else pays. Whether to claim depends on how the estimate compares with the deductible, and a single quarter refinish often lands close to it. Send photos and our estimator gives you the figure so you can decide; a repair you pay for yourself is never reported to anyone.

The gravel end of the marina lot has sandblasted the paint low on my rockers. Repair it, or accept it as boat-owner life?

Repair it before winter, whatever you decide about the parking. Sandblasted rockers are dozens of chips through to primer, and the first brine run in November gets into every one of them. The rocker is sanded back, primed, refinished and, if you like, finished with a chip-resistant coating along the bottom edge that shrugs off the next season of gravel. Parking a row up from the ramp does the rest.

The scratch shows silver metal on the rocker. How urgent is that?

Urgent enough to do before the first salt run in November. Bare steel low on the car sits in brine spray for four months and a scratch becomes a rust line by spring, which turns a paint job into a cut-and-weld job. Until it is booked, a dab of touch-up over the bare metal buys time; it is not a repair, but it keeps the water out.
