Auto Body Painting near Whitby

Three vehicles, a driveway built for two

Walk any street off Rossland or Garden after dinner and count. A minivan, a pickup for the job in the Thickson industrial strip, a compact for the teenager, all on a driveway poured for two sedans and a garage that holds bikes and a freezer. The paint damage follows from the geometry. Doors open into each other. The last car in backs out at an angle past the first and drags a mirror cap or a rear door along the brick pier. The windrow at the mouth of the driveway from December to March scuffs the lower bumper corner on every second exit. None of it is a collision, none of it is worth a claim, and all of it is on a car that may be going back to a dealer on Dundas in two years.

Brooklin adds the other kind. The subdivisions north of Winchester Road are still going up, and the trucks feeding them throw stone at everything behind them on Baldwin Street. By the second summer a hood that has followed a gravel hauler down Highway 12 twice a day is peppered to the primer along its leading edge, and once the salt on the 401 finds those chips the hood goes brown from the front back.

The colour on the car, not the colour on the label

A paint code is where the match starts, not where it ends. A dark blue that has spent six summers on an open driveway near the lake has flattened and shifted, and the roof and hood have drifted further than the doors. So the colour is sprayed on a test card, held against your panel under corrected light, and tinted until the two disappear into each other. Metallics and pearls are then carried into the panels on either side and faded out, because a fresh door that stops at its own seam is visible from the far end of a Taunton Road parking lot.

The hours go into what is under the colour. Chips are ground to sound metal, the panel is primed and blocked flat, and only then does it go into the booth for base, clear and a controlled cure. Clear coat magnifies whatever it covers, so a scuff painted over is a scuff you can still see, with gloss on it. The finished refinish carries a lifetime warranty on the paint, written down.

  • Colour tinted to a test card held against the actual panel in corrected light
  • Blend carried into the doors or fenders beside the repair so no edge exists
  • Prep to bare, sound metal under every chip before primer goes on
  • Written lifetime warranty on the paint itself

Two drivers down, one car back

Paint is planned work, which makes it the easiest Whitby job to fit around the drive. Nothing is hidden under a scuffed door, so the photo estimate — one shot of the whole panel, one close, in daylight — is also the schedule: our estimator counts the blend panels up front and tells you how many days the car needs. Most Whitby households solve the transport problem with their own driveway. One person drives the damaged car down the 401, the other follows in the second car, and they leave together; the reverse happens when we call. Where the work is going through a claim, the rental through your coverage is booked for your arrival instead.

The other habit worth copying is bundling. The garage-frame scuff, the peppered hood and the windrow corner priced as one job cost one trip and one booth cycle, and the blends overlap so the total is less than three separate visits. Send photos of everything you would fix if you were fixing anything, and our estimator prices it as one list.

Questions people ask

My minivan’s roof and hood have gone chalky but the doors look fine. Do I have to paint the whole van?

No. Chalky, cloudy paint on horizontal panels is clear coat that has broken down under sun, and it fails on the roof and hood first because they face the sky. Those panels are sanded, refinished and cleared, with the colour tinted to the doors so nothing changes at the seams. The doors keep their factory paint.

The hood is full of stone chips from Highway 12. Can that be touched up instead of repainted?

A handful of chips, yes. A leading edge peppered to the primer, no — touch-up on a hood like that looks like measles and does nothing to stop rust starting in the chips it misses. The hood is sanded back, primed, blocked and refinished with the colour blended into the fenders. Send one photo of the whole hood and one close enough to see the chips.

The lease is up in the spring and the dealer is in Whitby. Will a repaint show at the inspection?

Not if it is done properly. Inspectors look for texture, tape lines, colour drift and overspray, and a panel refinished with a blend and a full cure has none of them. What they do charge for is the scuff you left. Get it photographed now and we book the refinish for a week you can spare the car.
