Four ways Newmarket scratches a car
The first is vegetation. The older streets around Main and Prospect have cedar hedges and mature maples that reach over narrow driveways, and a wide SUV pulling in at night comes out with a set of fine lines along the flank. Out on the concession roads toward Sharon and Holland Landing the shoulders are soft and the brush grows in; pulling over for a passing truck drags branches down a door.
The second is ice. Newmarket windrows freeze hard, and a car scraping over one at the driveway mouth picks up gouges along the lower bumper cover and rocker that look like sandpaper from a metre away. The third is other people: a key line down a door in the GO station lot, or a bicycle handlebar along the side of a car parked on Main Street. The fourth is the rural garage — the tight old outbuildings north of town with a door frame that catches a mirror and a quarter panel on the way in. Each one is a different depth, and the depth chooses the fix.
Depth first, then the right repair
Start with depth. A nail drawn down the scratch that never stops in it means clear coat only, and the mark can usually be polished out — no paint, no blend, often done the same day. If the nail stops but you still see colour in the groove, it has gone through the clear into the base and the panel needs refinishing. If you see grey primer or bright metal, it is through everything, and the panel is repaired, primed, refinished and blended into its neighbours before winter salt finds the bare edge.
Our estimator reads that from photos more often than you would expect: a shot in daylight, at a low angle, with the scratch running across the frame, shows the depth well. The estimate names the repair — polish, spot refinish, or full panel with blend — and the colour is mixed to your code, tinted to the panel and test-sprayed before the car is touched. Refinish work carries a lifetime warranty.
- Clear-coat scratches polished, no repaint
- Base-coat scratches refinished and blended to the next panel
- Metal-deep scratches primed and sealed so rust never starts
Dropping the car on the way to work
A good share of Newmarket’s scratch customers already drive past our exit. If you commute into North York, Markham or Scarborough, the 404 southbound puts you at Sheppard Avenue with the shop a few hundred metres from the ramp, beside Fairview Mall. Drop the car at the start of the day, take the rental if the job is a claim or the short walk to Don Mills station if it is not, and collect it on the way home when the work is a one-day polish or a two-day refinish.
For the deeper scratches that need booth time, we book the drop-off for a day that suits the commute and confirm pickup once the cure is done. Vandalism is a comprehensive claim with your normal deductible, so a key line is worth photographing and pricing both ways before you decide whether to file.
Questions people ask
The hedge scratches look bad but my fingernail does not catch. Can they be polished?
Almost certainly. Lines that do not catch a nail are in the clear coat and come out with machine polishing, usually the same day, with no paint involved. If a few of them are deeper, our estimator will point those out on the estimate and price a spot refinish for that panel only.
Ice gouges along my lower bumper look like white sandpaper. Why do they need more than a polish?
Because they are not one scratch but hundreds, and they cut past the clear. A frozen windrow works like a rasp: it leaves a band of parallel gouges through clear and colour, and on the bumper’s plastic the white you see is often the cover itself. Polishing would only round their edges. The band is sanded flat, the plastic is primed where it shows, and the corner is refinished and blended — a booked job, not a while-you-wait one.
Is a scratch down to metal urgent?
More than it looks. Bare metal on a lower door or rocker in a Newmarket winter starts rusting within weeks under the salt brine, and the repair grows from a refinish into a rust job. A dab of touch-up paint is a fair holding measure; send photos and book the proper repair before the season turns.
