Frame Straightening in Unionville

A technician in a face shield grinding near a rear wheel arch, sparks flying

An icy lane, a curb, and a lease with two years left

The narrow lanes around Toogood Pond ice over quietly, and a slide at 30 km/h that ends against a curb can look like nothing — a scuffed wheel, maybe. But a curb strike loads the suspension sideways, and on many newer vehicles the control arms hang from a subframe whose mounting points can shift a few millimetres without a single panel creasing. On a nearly new luxury SUV the stakes are higher again: some of these vehicles carry aluminum structure at the front, and aluminum does not co-operate with a pull — it has little spring-back, and metal worked a second time hardens and cracks — so damaged sections are replaced at the joints the manufacturer specifies instead of being straightened.

The lease and the value change the arithmetic too. A total loss in Ontario is a comparison — repair cost against the car’s actual cash value, with salvage in the equation — and a two-year-old SUV usually carries enough value that a proper structural repair is the outcome rather than a write-off. What the lease company will want at the end is documentation, and a measured repair produces exactly that.

Unibody means the structure is everywhere, including under the paint

Almost nothing in a Unionville driveway has a separate frame; floor, rails, pillars and aprons are one welded shell, and a hard hit moves it as a whole. The faster hits come from Kennedy between Highway 7 and 16th Avenue and from the 404 ramps, where a front-corner impact folds an apron and pushes a rail back; the slower ones are winter — black ice on Warden, the curb at the pond. Afterward the signs are quiet: a door that wants a lift to latch, a hood gap wider on one side, a car that crabs slightly on the 404 even after an alignment. When the alignment shop says the numbers will not come in, that is the structure answering.

  • Doors or a liftgate that suddenly need effort to close
  • One headlamp sitting deeper in its opening than the other
  • Tire shoulders wearing in the weeks after the collision
  • An alignment that ends with numbers the rack will not accept

Measured before, measured after, and moved by flatbed if in doubt

The repair is bookended by measurement. Reference points along the structure are checked against the manufacturer’s data on the rack to find everything that moved; steel that can be corrected is anchored and brought back in small pulls with measurements between them; aluminum and some high-strength sections are replaced at factory joints. Then the same points are measured again, and the before-and-after printout goes in your file — for the insurance company, for the lease return, and for you. Structural parts are where we push hardest for OEM, because a rail is the one place a nearly-right part is wrong.

A curb strike with no other vehicle involved is a collision claim on your own policy, and a car that pulls, crabs or steers off-centre should not test the 404 at speed. We help arrange the flatbed from Unionville — the destination is the owner’s call in Ontario, so name Sheppard and Don Mills — and the rental through your coverage is set up for the real length of a structural repair, which is longer than a bumper job and planned that way from the start.

Questions people ask

The rail on my leased SUV was sectioned and replaced. What happens at the lease return?

The inspection sees a documented repair. You hand over the measurement printout showing the structure back within factory tolerance, the invoice showing OEM sections installed at the manufacturer’s joints, and the paint warranty. Lease companies deal in paperwork, and a structural repair with complete paperwork is a very different conversation from one without.

The car cannot be driven and is sitting near the Kennedy ramp to the 407. Can the flatbed bring it straight to you?

Yes — in Ontario the tow destination is yours to name, so tell the operator Sheppard and Don Mills and ask for an itemized invoice. Call us while the truck is loading and we will be expecting it; if the car has already been dropped at a yard, we coordinate the second move before storage charges build.

After the curb hit at the pond, the alignment shop could not bring the numbers in. Is the car unsafe?

Treat it that way until it is measured. Numbers that will not come in usually mean a mounting point or a rail has moved, and a car in that state should stay off the 404 at speed. On the rack, the measurements say which point moved and how far, and whether the fix is a correction or a replaced section — guessing is the one option we would rule out.
