Scratch Repair in Newtonbrook

Multiple scratches marring a pale blue front bumper near the headlight

The laneway behind the restaurant

The Yonge Street strip between Finch and Steeles is one of the best places to eat in the city, and one of the hardest places to park. The Korean barbecue rooms, the Persian grills, and the cafés between them were built when a few spaces out back were enough, so the rear lots are shared, tight, and reached through laneways with a bollard at every corner. Scratches from there have a signature: a long horizontal scrape along a rear door and quarter panel from a wall or a parked car, a mirror cap raked on a post, and a lower bumper corner dragged across a concrete curb while backing into a space that was never really a space.

Add the Centerpoint lot and the Finch commuter parking and you get the other common source, a key. Keyed cars are rarer than people fear, but they do happen in big unattended lots, and the line usually runs the length of the car at hip height. That one is a comprehensive claim if you choose to make it, and it is worth a police report even when you do not.

Reading the depth before touching the car

A Newtonbrook scratch lands at one of three depths. A scuff that sits in the clear coat, where a fingernail slides over it and the mark looks white or hazy, comes out with compound and a polisher and does not need paint. A scratch that has gone through the colour — it holds a shadow at a low angle, and you see a different shade at the bottom — needs the area sanded, primed, and refinished. A gouge that shows bare metal or the grey of the plastic bumper underneath needs filling first, then the same refinish — and on steel it needs doing soon, because a winter on Steeles will rust it.

Our estimator reads that from your photos. A close shot in daylight with the scratch running across the frame, one from a step back, and one from a low angle that shows whether the line casts a shadow tell most of the story, and the estimate says which category you are in and what it involves. The paint on a refinished panel is blended into the panels beside it so the repair does not announce itself, and it is covered by a lifetime warranty. Most laneway scrapes are a mix: a polish for the shallow end and paint for the deep one.

  • Clear-coat scuffs polished, not painted
  • Scratches through the colour sanded, refinished, and blended
  • Gouges to metal or plastic filled and sealed before paint
  • Depth judged from daylight photos, priced in writing

Cash or claim, and the trip over

A scratch is the repair most often paid for without insurance, and for good reason. A single-panel refinish sits close to a typical deductible, and the claim goes on your record whether the number is large or small. A keyed car, or a scrape that runs across three panels, is different; there the comprehensive claim usually makes sense and we run it with your insurance company for you. The estimate lays out the repair cost so you can set it against your deductible before deciding.

The drive is Finch east to Leslie, Leslie south to Sheppard, and we are at Sheppard and Don Mills, about 11 to 17 minutes from the Yonge strip. A polish is often done while you wait for a coffee; a refinish is a few days, with a rental only if it is on a claim. Bring the car after the photos, not before. The point of the estimate is that you know the answer before you make the trip.

Questions people ask

I scraped the whole side on a wall behind a restaurant on Yonge. One panel or three?

Usually the rear door and quarter panel, with the front door polished rather than painted if the scratch faded out before it got there. Send photos of each panel separately. Where two adjacent panels are refinished the colour is blended across both so there is no seam.

A key line showed up after a night parked near Yonge and Hendon. Do I report it somewhere before you fix it?

Report it as vandalism — online with Toronto police or at a station, not at a Collision Reporting Centre, which handles collisions. If you claim it, it goes under comprehensive coverage, so fault does not come into it. Photograph the full length of the line; when the key went through the colour on more than two panels the claim is normally worth making, and for one panel it often is not.

Can a scratch be fixed the same day?

A clear-coat scuff can, by polishing. Anything that needs paint stays a few days because the primer and clear have to cure and be polished. Our estimator will tell you which from the photos so you can plan the drop-off around your commute from Finch.
