Scratch Repair for Wexford Drivers

Multiple scratches marring a pale blue front bumper near the headlight

Two driveways, one property line, no margin

The bungalows around Wexford Collegiate were built when a family had one car and it was narrower than anything sold today. The driveways run in pairs along the property line, and each one now holds two vehicles nose to tail. That geometry produces scratches nobody plans: a mirror housing dragged along a neighbour’s door as you pull in, a quarter panel scraped along a fence post or the corner of a garage that was never meant to fit a crossover, a recycling bin caught by a bumper on a dark morning. Kids’ bikes leaning on cars add the fine lines on lower doors that show up in the first spring wash.

The plaza lots along Lawrence add the deliberate kind. A car left overnight near the strip sometimes comes back with a key line down the driver’s side, and a car parked tight to a pillar comes back with a broad scuff at bumper height where the next driver misjudged the turn.

A scratch that will polish out gives your fingernail nothing to snag on

Hook a fingernail into the mark and pull it along its length: if it runs through without catching anywhere, the scratch is still in the clear coat and it can be machine-polished out with compound, no paint involved, often while you wait. A mark that shows colour at its base has gone through the clear, and a spot repair with fresh base and clear over that area, blended into the surrounding paint, is the fix. If you see grey primer or bare metal, or the scratch runs the length of a panel, the panel is refinished and the colour blended into the next one so the repair has no edge.

Plastic bumpers are the exception. A scuff on the cover often looks worse than it is because the plastic has smeared, and a sand, flexible primer and refinish of the corner handles it. Our estimator reads the photos, tells you which of the four you have, and puts the price in writing before you decide anything. Where the scratch has already gone to metal on a car that spends the winter on a salted Wexford street, we say so, because a metal scratch becomes a rust line by spring.

When the repair costs less than the deductible, skip the claim

A driveway scrape against your own garage or a neighbour’s parked car is collision coverage, with your deductible and a possible effect on your record. A key line is vandalism, which sits under comprehensive; the deductible applies but the claim is usually treated differently from an at-fault collision. A clear-coat polish or a single spot repair is often less than the deductible either way, and if so a claim gains you nothing.

For a scratch across two or three panels, the claim is worth opening, and we handle it from our desk with your insurance company. Ontario lets you pick the shop regardless of any preferred list. A contractor whose van doors are scratched to metal at the Ellesmere units usually wants it done quickly and paid directly, and the van is back the next day for a spot repair, or in a few days when a full door needs the booth and the cure.

Questions people ask

My neighbour’s mirror scraped my door in our shared driveway. Whose insurance pays?

The driver who was moving is normally the one at fault under the Fault Determination Rules, and your own insurance company pays for your door under DCPD. If it was you moving, it is your collision coverage. For a scuff that polishes out, most neighbours settle it between themselves; send photos and we tell you which kind it is.

The scratch is fine but long, along the whole side of the car. Is that a polish or a repaint?

Length matters less than depth. A long, hairline mark that stays in the clear polishes out even across three panels. A long mark that shows grey or a different colour at its base has reached primer along its length, and that is a refinish of every panel it crosses, with blending at each end. Take a photo along the panel at a low angle and we can usually tell.

Can I touch it up myself with a dealer pen and leave it?

On a scratch down to metal, a touch-up pen keeps the rust away and is better than nothing until you can get it done properly. On a clear-coat scratch, it makes things worse: the pen leaves a raised blob that has to be sanded off before a polish. Use the pen only where you see bare metal, and only as a stopgap.
