Auto Body Painting for Wexford

Why Wexford paint jobs come with their own problems

The cars in this neighbourhood live outdoors. Bungalow driveways have no garages worth the name, so the roofs and hoods of anything more than eight or ten years old have clear coat going chalky and peeling in the summer sun. Those panels cannot be spot-repaired; the failure spreads under the new clear. We tell you that in the estimate rather than after.

The second local pattern is the work vehicle. A trades van from Ellesmere comes in with a door that has worn lettering, and under the vinyl the paint is a different shade from the rest of the van because it never saw daylight. Strip the vinyl and you have a ghost of the old name. We refinish the whole door, blend into the panel beside it, and let it cure before the sign shop returns. The third is the taxi or rideshare car in a common silver, where a blend into three panels sounds like a lot until you see a silver door that was sprayed alone.

The paint code starts the match; your own panel finishes it

A code only says what colour the car wore when it left the factory; sun on a plaza roof and a decade of salt decide what it wears now. The mix is tinted against a reading taken from your own panel and proven on a sprayed card beside the car before anything enters the booth. Preparation is most of the labour — stripping, filling, priming, sanding the panel flat — and then colour and clear go on and bake. The new colour is faded past the damaged panel into its neighbour rather than stopped at the edge, which is why a door estimate often lists the fender beside it: the transition disappears instead of showing as a line.

Booking the booth and getting back to Lawrence

Paint cannot be hurried, and a driver who needs the car back cannot be strung along, so the plan is set before the car arrives. Photos first: our estimator reads them the day they come in and tells you, in writing, how many panels are really involved and how many days the booth and cure will take. Insurance work opens with your insurance company from our desk. Cash work gets the same estimate, with the choice of a spot repair or a full panel laid out plainly.

Drop the car when the booth is booked, not before, and the rental arranged through your coverage starts at the counter. Once the car is back, give the finish time: clear coat keeps hardening for weeks after it leaves the booth, so wax this early would seal in solvents that are still working their way out, and an automatic brush wash would mar a surface that has not reached full hardness. Hand wash only for the first month. The refinish carries a lifetime warranty.

Questions people ask

My hood’s clear coat is peeling from the sun. Can you just spray clear over it?

No, and a hood done that way peels again within a season. Failed clear has to be sanded back to sound base or primer, and usually the whole hood is refinished with fresh base and clear. The good news is that a hood is a single panel with clean edges, so it blends easily into the fenders.

The van door is white. Surely white does not need blending?

White is one of the hardest colours to match because there are dozens of factory whites and every one of them yellows or chalks differently in the sun. A door sprayed alone in fresh white beside a fender that has faded for years is obvious from across the lot. We blend into the adjacent panel on white just as we would on a metallic.

The taxi roof light bolts through the roof. What happens to it when the roof is resprayed?

It comes off before the roof is sanded. Painting around the mount would leave a ring of old colour and a raised edge for winter water to work under, so the light and its wiring are disconnected, the whole roof is refinished, and the mount goes back on with fresh sealant once the panel has baked. Tell your dispatcher to plan for the cure time; the estimate gives you the exact days.
