Scratch Repair in Mississauga

Multiple scratches marring a pale blue front bumper near the headlight

Where Mississauga cars pick up scratches

The newer parts of the city are built wide; the older parts are not. Port Credit’s streets off Lakeshore were laid out for a village, and the marina lots and the patio-season parking along Lakeshore Road put cars nose-first into posts, planters and each other. Streetsville’s main street has the same problem in a smaller package — angled parking, a delivery truck, a door opened into a passing mirror. And the condo towers climbing along the Hurontario line come with underground garages whose ramps and pillars were drawn for a smaller car than most people drive now, so a rocker panel or a rear quarter drags concrete at walking speed on the turn into the second level.

The rest are the scratches every city has. A key along the driver’s side in a Square One lot after an argument nobody saw. A hedge in Lorne Park that has grown into the driveway. A garage-door frame in a Meadowvale semi with a tight turn from the street. A bicycle pedal in the Heartland lot. They look alike from ten feet away and are different repairs up close, which is why we want a photograph before a car.

A close photo carries the depth from your driveway to our counter

Every scratch is a depth question, and a fingernail drawn lightly along it sorts most of them. If the nail does not catch, the mark is in the clear coat only and it can usually be polished out — a job small enough that we will tell you so honestly, and that a shop closer to you can also do. If the nail catches but you still see your car’s colour in the groove, the scratch has cut through the clear into the colour coat and needs a spot refinish: sand, prime, colour, clear, and a blend into the surrounding area so there is no halo. If you see white or grey primer, or bare metal, the panel needs to be refinished properly, and if it is a key mark that runs across two or three panels, that means blending across all of them so the repair has no edges.

Our estimator reads that depth from a close, well-lit photo in most cases and sends back a written estimate with the repair type named — polish, spot, panel, multi-panel — the same business day. That is the number you take to your insurance company if it is vandalism under comprehensive, or the number you weigh against leaving it alone if it is a hedge.

  • Nail glides: clear-coat scuff, usually polished out
  • Nail catches, colour visible: spot refinish with a blend
  • Primer or metal showing: full panel refinish, blended into its neighbours
  • Keyed across panels: every touched panel refinished and blended, lifetime warranty

Is a scratch worth 33 kilometres?

Sometimes it is not, and we will say so. A clear-coat scuff from a Port Credit planter is a polish; drive to the nearest shop you trust. What brings Mississauga drivers to Sheppard and Don Mills for scratch work is the deeper end of the scale: a keyed car where the refinish has to disappear across a door, a quarter panel and a bumper; a lease return where the inspector will be looking for exactly this; a new car whose first scratch the owner wants gone rather than hidden; a family that wants the conversation in Mandarin.

For those jobs the trip is one trip. The estimate is done before you leave, the rental — if the work is under comprehensive and your coverage includes it — is timed to your drop-off, and the finished panels are photographed in daylight and sent to your phone before you get back on the 401 to collect the car. The refinish carries a lifetime warranty in writing, which matters more on a car you plan to keep or hand back than on one you are about to sell.

Questions people ask

The ramp wall in my Hurontario condo garage rubbed a stripe along the rocker panel. What repair is that?

Start with a wash: some of the stripe is the wall’s paint sitting on your clear coat, and it polishes off. Concrete usually wins underneath, though, so expect part of the stripe to be through the clear into colour, which means the rocker is refinished with the colour carried into the lower door so there is no edge. It is a single-car scrape, so it is an out-of-pocket job unless it is part of a larger claim — the photos and the estimate let you decide from home.

Can a deep scratch be touched up instead of repainted?

It can be filled with touch-up colour to stop rust, and on a dark car in a hidden spot that is a fair choice. It will not disappear. Touch-up sits proud of the surface and the colour never blends, so if the scratch is on a door face or a hood you will see it every time you walk up. For a scratch through to primer on a visible panel, a proper refinish is the only repair that vanishes.

How do I take a photo that lets you judge the depth?

Wash the area, then shoot in daylight from about a hand’s width away with the scratch running across the frame, and a second photo from a low angle so the groove catches the light. Add a wide shot showing which panels it crosses. From those our estimator can usually tell clear coat from colour from primer without seeing the car.
