Scratch Repair for Ajax

Multiple scratches marring a pale blue front bumper near the headlight

Narrow driveways and new construction

North of Taunton, Ajax is still being built, and the scratches show it. The subdivisions off Salem Road and Audley Road have driveways designed for one car that hold two, garage openings a hand’s width wider than a minivan, and a parade of dump trucks, concrete mixers and contractor pickups on the collector roads that leave gravel in every lane. The typical scratch is a long horizontal scrape on a rear door or quarter panel from a garage-door frame, a chipped hood from following a truck too closely on Audley, or a keyed line on a car parked on the street because the driveway was full.

South of the 401 the older streets have their own version: cedar hedges and chain-link along narrow driveways, low brick walls at the end of laneways, and street parking near the waterfront trail where a passing bike pedal or a trailer hitch leaves a mark. The lots at Durham Centre and the hospital add key scratches and shopping-cart streaks. None of these is dramatic; all of them look worse under a porch light than they will on the estimate.

From polish to primer: reading how far the scratch went

Depth sorts every scratch into one of three repairs, and your nail reads it: a slow pass along the mark that never hangs up means the damage is in the clear coat, and it comes out with compounding and polishing — no paint, an hour or two, and the factory finish stays. Where the nail hangs up but the scratch is the same colour as the car, it has gone through the clear into the base coat; that section is sanded, refinished and the colour blended into the surrounding area so no edge shows. If you can see white primer or grey metal, the scratch is through to the substrate and the panel is prepped, primed and painted, with the repair extended far enough to hide.

The photo does most of that diagnosis. Take one straight on, one at a low angle in daylight so the depth shows, and one of the whole panel. Our estimator writes the estimate from those the same business day and tells you which of the three cases you have. A scrape from a garage frame that looks like a disaster is often clear-coat only along most of its length with one deep spot at the end — a small refinish, not a whole door.

Fitting the trip around a shift

Ajax runs on shifts and the 401, so a scratch repair is booked the way a hospital appointment would be: for the hour that works. A polish-out is a while-you-wait job, done while you walk over to Fairview Mall. A refinish needs the car for a day or more, so the drop-off is timed to a rental through your coverage or to a day you are already heading into Toronto. Nobody from Ajax drives 33 kilometres for a look; the look happens in the photos.

Whether to claim it is a question of arithmetic and record. A keyed car is typically covered under comprehensive with the normal deductible, and for a long scratch across two panels that can be worth doing. A single clear-coat scratch usually costs less than the deductible and is paid directly. We tell you which it is before you decide, and we do not inflate an estimate so that it clears a deductible.

  • Depth read from your photos, answer in writing
  • Clear-coat scratches polished while you wait
  • Refinishes blended into the next panel — no visible edge
  • Drop-off timed to a shift, a rental, or a trip you were already making

Questions people ask

I scraped the garage frame at our new house off Salem Road. Does the whole door get repainted?

Usually not. Most garage-frame scrapes are shallow along most of their length, with a deep patch where the frame bit hardest. The shallow section polishes out and the deep patch is refinished and blended, so the paint is new only where it has to be. The photos tell us which, before you drive.

A long deliberate line showed up across both doors overnight near Rotary Park. What is the right way to handle it?

Photograph it in daylight first, then make an online report to Durham police — vandalism is a police matter, not a Collision Reporting Centre one. On the insurance side it falls under comprehensive coverage: your comprehensive deductible applies and no fault attaches to you. From there it is arithmetic — a line through the colour across two doors usually needs enough paint to clear the deductible, and we send the figure so the choice stays yours.

Gravel from construction trucks on Audley has chipped my hood. Is that a scratch repair or a paint job?

A few chips can be touched and levelled individually. A hood peppered across its whole front edge is refinished as a panel, because dozens of touch-ups look worse than one clean repaint. Send a photo of the hood from the front at knee height and we tell you which it is.
