Auto Body Painting in Malvern

Why Malvern roofs and hoods peel

Walk through any garage court off McLevin or Sewells and you will see it: a roof or a hood where the clear coat has gone milky and then lifted in flakes, leaving the colour underneath dull and chalky. The car has spent every summer in an open court or a visitor lot with nothing between it and the sun, and every winter under salt. Factory clear on cars from the late 2000s and early 2010s was thin to begin with, and a decade of that exposure finishes it. The car runs fine. It just looks tired, and the owner is a little embarrassed by it.

The other paint jobs from Malvern are more sudden. A bumper cover scuffed to bare plastic on a visitor-lot stop. A door keyed on a crescent overnight. A quarter panel with the colour ground off by a brick garage corner. A Tapscott van with a company name to hide under a fresh coat before it goes back on lease. Each needs the same thing: paint that matches the rest of the car, not the colour chip.

Failed clear comes off completely before any colour goes on

A peeled roof cannot be patched. The failed clear is sanded off completely, down to sound colour or to primer, because new clear laid over flaking clear lifts with it. The panel is primed, blocked flat and sealed, then colour goes on in the booth and the clear over it. The pillars and the tops of the doors are blended so the roof does not read as a different car from the sides. A hood gets the same, with the fender tops blended to meet it.

Matching is done against your car, not a code. The mix is sprayed on a test card and held against the fender or the door in daylight until the two agree, which matters most on the silvers, the champagne beiges and the pearl whites that fill Malvern courts, where the flake shifts with the angle. Trim, handles and lamps come off rather than being masked, so no hard edge hides under a seal. Once cured the car can be washed normally; hold off on wax and polish for a few weeks. The refinish is warrantied for as long as you own the car.

  • Failed clear coat removed entirely, never coated over
  • Colour tinted against your car in daylight, blended into adjoining panels
  • Trim and lamps removed, not masked around
  • Lifetime warranty on the refinish

Timing it around a shift and one car

A paint job keeps the car for several days — prep, colour and clear, cure, reassembly — and that is the hard part for a Malvern household with one vehicle. So paint work is booked to a day you can spare the car, usually the start of a stretch of days off, and the estimate says plainly how long the car will be with us. Paint for a peeled roof is not an insurance matter; it is wear, and you pay for it directly. Paint after a scrape may be part of a claim, and then the rental through your coverage covers the gap.

Photos first, always. For fade and peel, shoot the panel in direct sun from a low angle so the texture shows; for a scrape, shoot the whole panel and then close in. Our estimator reads them, prices the work in writing, and will say if a polish would do instead of paint. The drop-off is the 401 west to the 404 and one exit north; the bus back to Neilson runs from Don Mills station next door.

Questions people ask

The clear coat is peeling on the roof of my ten-year-old car. Is it worth painting?

If the car is mechanically sound and you plan to keep it, usually yes. A peeled roof lets water sit against bare colour and primer, and rust follows. A properly refinished roof, blended into the pillars, is warrantied for life and takes years off the car’s appearance. If the peel has spread to every panel, we will tell you honestly what a full repaint means and whether the car justifies it.

Can you match the paint on a car that has faded unevenly?

Yes, because the match is made against the panels next to the repair, not against a factory chip. On a car where the roof has faded more than the doors, we blend into the adjoining panels so the eye sees a gradual change rather than a line.

Will you paint my work van with the lettering removed?

Yes. Vinyl lettering comes off, the ghost image it leaves in the clear coat is sanded out, and the panel is refinished so nothing shows through. Tapscott operators often do this before a lease return; send photos of each lettered panel and every panel is priced separately on one estimate.
