Toyota now calls the before-and-after scan necessary, so it opens every Toyota estimate
Start with the scan. Toyota’s collision repair information bulletin on diagnostics used to say the company “strongly recommends” checking the vehicle electronically before and after body work. The wording was revised: a health-check scan is now described as necessary before and after every repair on a collision-damaged Toyota. For a RAV4 that nosed into the car ahead on the 404 ramp at Sheppard, that means the first job is reading every module and saving the result, before a single clip is popped.
The reason sits in Toyota’s own position statement. A crash can damage wiring, connectors or a control module without switching on the malfunction indicator, so a Corolla with a dark instrument cluster has not proven anything. The pre-repair scan records what the impact left behind, plus anything older, which keeps an unrelated fault from being blamed on the repair later. The post-repair scan confirms that nothing was left open once the car is back together.
One clarification matters for Ontario drivers. These bulletins are Toyota’s repair information, written for the trade in North America; they are not provincial law, and no Ontario statute orders a body shop to scan. What they do is give the scan a documented reason, so when our estimator sends a Toyota estimate to your insurance company, the scan lines arrive with Toyota’s position attached rather than resting on the shop’s word alone.
Ordinary front-end work is what knocks Toyota Safety Sense out of aim
Toyota Safety Sense relies on a forward camera at the top of the windshield and a millimetre-wave radar at the front of the car. Toyota’s guidance lists the jobs that may require those two to be recalibrated, and almost all of them are routine body shop operations rather than dramatic structural repairs.
Toyota’s collision guidance goes a step further for the radar: after some common remove-and-replace and remove-and-install operations, it must be calibrated. On those models, taking the bumper off to reach a cracked absorber or a bent bracket can be enough to put calibration on the repair plan, even when the radar itself was never struck.
Which procedure applies depends on the model year, the generation of Safety Sense fitted and the exact operations on the estimate, so it is looked up against your vehicle identification number rather than assumed. Calibration is never automatic and never promised as included. When it applies, the estimate names it; when teardown reveals a radar bracket that the photos could not show, it arrives as a supplement with Toyota’s requirement beside it. The low-speed taps that cause this, a Camry rolling into a light standard in the Fairview Mall lot or a bumper-to-bumper nudge on Don Mills Road southbound, usually look cosmetic from the curb.
- Windshield replaced, or the camera bracket on the glass disturbed
- Front bumper cover or grille removed, refitted or replaced
- Wheel alignment performed, or ride height changed by suspension work
- Any repair that moves the panel, bracket or support a sensor is mounted to
A Toyota hybrid sits for a timed wait before anyone reaches for a welder
Toyota sells hybrid versions of many of its models, from the Prius to the RAV4 Hybrid and the Corolla Hybrid, and each one is isolated before work that could touch its high-voltage circuit. On Toyota’s hybrids that means pulling the service plug and then waiting, roughly ten minutes in Toyota’s procedure, so the inverter capacitor can discharge before the technician continues.
The plug is not in the same place on every model. Depending on the vehicle it hides behind trunk trim, under the floor or near the rear seat, so the location is read from the procedure for that model instead of from memory of the last hybrid in the bay. That wait, and the confirmation afterward, belong on the estimate as their own step. For what changes in a rear hit near the battery, our page on hybrid collision repair goes into the inspection side.
Genuine Toyota parts are worth asking for on anything that protects you
Toyota’s position statement on replacement parts covers Toyota, Lexus and Scion together. It says Toyota does not recommend alternative parts because they have not been tested for crashworthiness, airbag deployment or occupant safety. That is the manufacturer’s view, and it carries weight when you are deciding what goes behind the bumper cover.
Ontario law does not force a shop or an insurance company to use original parts. Your insurance company may write the estimate for parts of like kind and quality, and you may ask for Toyota parts and pay the difference. Where a part has a safety job, such as a bumper reinforcement, an energy absorber, a radar bracket or a structural panel, we push for genuine Toyota on the estimate and attach Toyota’s statement. For a cosmetic piece on an older Corolla, the choice is more open, and we tell you which is which.
Pearl white on a RAV4 is built in three layers, so the panel next to the repair gets sprayed too
The RAV4 was Canada’s best-selling SUV in 2025, and pearl white is a colour that rewards a careful refinish. Many Toyota pearl whites, including Wind Chill Pearl under code 089 and the white sold under code 070, are refinished as tri-coats: a ground colour, a translucent pearl mid-coat, then clear. The shade you see depends on how many mid-coat passes went on, which is why the painter sprays a test panel with different pass counts and holds it against your car before touching it.
Because that pearl layer is see-through, a repaired panel that sits beside an untouched one will read as a slightly different white unless the colour is carried into the neighbour. A bumper cover is usually painted complete as a part, and on a pearl the fender beside it is often blended so the plastic’s slightly different texture does not show as a step in colour. The code itself is on the label in the driver’s door opening if you want to check before you call.
Questions people ask
My RAV4 only has a scuffed bumper. Does Toyota still expect a scan?
Toyota’s revised bulletin describes the pre- and post-repair health check as necessary on any collision-damaged vehicle, without a size threshold. On a light scuff the scan is quick, and it is the only way to show that no module stored a fault from the impact.
Do I need to take my Toyota to a Toyota dealer for collision work?
No. In Ontario you choose the shop. Crash Consultant is an independent shop with no Toyota certification; we follow Toyota’s published repair information for your model, and where a calibration needs equipment we do not have, it is sublet and the car comes back finished.
Why does my Corolla Hybrid estimate include time before any repair starts?
That is the high-voltage isolation: the service plug comes out and Toyota’s procedure calls for a wait of about ten minutes while the inverter capacitor discharges. It is a documented step, so it appears as its own line.
Why is the paint line on my white Camry larger than on a grey one with the same dent?
If the white is a pearl tri-coat, it needs an extra layer, a test panel to set the mid-coat count and usually a blend into the next panel. A solid grey skips all three, so the refinish time is shorter for the same damage.
