belairdirect car claim: do you have to use their repair shop?

A Service Centre recommendation from belairdirect is an offer, and one sentence declines it

When you report a collision, belairdirect may suggest a Service Centre from its preferred network. Its own claims pages say you are not required to bring the car there. That lines up with the rule every Ontario driver has: the insurance company can recommend a body shop, but the choice of who repairs the car stays with the owner.

Declining is not a negotiation. Tell the person handling the file, or type it into the claim notes, that the car is going to the shop you have chosen and give the shop’s name. Nothing about your coverage, your deductible or your rental entitlement depends on that answer. If someone on the call makes it sound like a requirement, point to belairdirect’s own Service Centre page, which says you are not required to bring the car there.

Where people get caught is timing. A driver who has just been bumped on the DVP ramp at Wynford, standing on the shoulder with hazards flashing, often agrees to whatever is offered first. If the car can be driven, nothing has to be decided at the roadside. If it needs a tow, say where it is going before the truck hooks it, because the lot where the car lands is usually where the estimate starts.

Buying direct means nobody stands between you and the belairdirect claims desk

belairdirect is a wholly owned subsidiary of Intact Financial Corporation that sells auto and home insurance straight to consumers. That last part matters more during a claim than people expect. Intact Insurance is sold through brokers, and a broker can help report the loss and follow up with the adjuster. A belairdirect customer has no broker in the middle, so you are the one who opens the file, answers the questions and passes along the shop’s name.

The tools are built for that. A car claim can be started online through the Client Centre, inside the belairdirect app, or by phone, and its progress can be followed in the app or the Client Centre afterwards. Photos of the damage, the other driver’s details and any police or Collision Reporting Centre paperwork can go in early, which saves a round of follow-up calls.

Keep the two brands separate in your head even though they share a parent company. Your policy and your claim are with belairdirect, and the claim number that the app or Client Centre shows you is the one a repair shop needs. The page on Intact Insurance claims covers the broker-sold side of the same family if a relative is insured there and the advice you hear at dinner does not match your file.

What the Rely network gives you, and what you trade by choosing another shop

belairdirect works with the Rely network of repair shops. At a network shop, it guarantees the repairs for as long as you own the car, and it pays the repairer directly. Those are real conveniences, and a driver who has a network shop on the way to work and likes what they see there has a fair reason to say yes.

Choose a shop outside the network and two things shift. The belairdirect guarantee is described for network repairs, so the warranty that protects the work comes from the shop that does it. Ask for it in writing and read what it covers; ours is a lifetime warranty on paint and refinish, issued by the shop itself, so it stays the same whoever insures the car next year. Second, the money moves differently. The claim is settled according to the estimate and the policy, and you should ask the adjuster plainly how payment will be issued and whether a direction to pay is needed so the shop can be paid on your behalf.

None of this changes what belairdirect owes. The insurance company pays for the covered damage under your policy, less any deductible, wherever the repair happens. Disagreements about parts or labour hours are worked out between the shop and the appraiser, with you brought in only when there is a decision that belongs to you, such as paying the difference for an original part on an older car.

With no broker on a belairdirect policy, the calls after a crash are yours to make, in this order

Police duties come first, and they have nothing to do with which company insures you. An injury means 911 from the scene and waiting for officers. A crash with nobody hurt goes to the nearest Collision Reporting Centre promptly, generally within 24 hours, if the damage to both cars together could top the provincial reporting threshold or the other driver left. belairdirect is the next call, through the app, the Client Centre or by phone, and the standard Ontario policy expects notice within seven days.

Who pays turns on fault and on the other car. If an identified vehicle insured in Ontario hit you, Direct Compensation – Property Damage has belairdirect, your own company, pay for your damage to the extent you were not at fault; nothing about your car is claimed from the other driver’s company. Any share of fault that is yours falls under your collision coverage, with its deductible, if the policy includes it.

Once you have a claim number, send it to the shop with a few clear photos taken in daylight. Our estimator writes the estimate, sends it to belairdirect, and handles the back-and-forth with the appraiser. A rental depends on your coverage: it is covered when you were not at fault, and otherwise through OPCF 20 if your policy carries it. Drivers who drop off at our door and do not need a rental right away often take Line 4 from Don Mills station, which shares the block with the shop.

Questions people ask

If I report the collision in the belairdirect app, am I locked into its Service Centre?

No. Filing in the app, the Client Centre or by phone only opens the claim. The repair shop is a separate decision, and you can name your own shop at the start or add it to the file later.

My cousin is with Intact and was told something different. Does that apply to my belairdirect claim?

Not necessarily. The two brands share a parent company, but your policy and claim are with belairdirect, and its claims team decides your file. Go by what your own policy and adjuster say rather than a relative’s Intact experience.

Will belairdirect stand behind a repair done outside the Rely network?

Its repair guarantee is described for network shops. Outside the network, the warranty comes from the shop that did the work, so get it in writing before you sign the repair authorization and check that it covers paint and refinish.

The car already went to a Service Centre. Can I still move it?

Usually, yes, and it is easiest before teardown or parts ordering starts. Tell belairdirect where the car is going, arrange the move, and expect any storage or teardown already done to be part of the conversation.
