Intact is sold through brokers, so your first claim call may go to the person who sold you the policy
Intact Insurance policies are placed by brokers, which is why many North York drivers phone their broker first after a crash rather than the company itself. That works. The broker can help you report the loss, but the claim is still opened, adjusted and paid by Intact. The same parent company, Intact Financial, also owns belairdirect and BrokerLink, so a neighbour insured with belairdirect is dealing with a related company that sells directly and runs its own app and claim process.
If you would rather do it yourself, the Intact Insurance App has a car-claim path under Claims, then Submit a car claim. It takes up to 20 documents, which covers the photos, a police or Collision Reporting Centre report and the other driver’s details, and the claim can then be followed in the app or in Intact’s Client Centre. Whichever door you use, the Ontario policy expects notice of the collision within seven days.
Police reporting sits outside the Intact claim altogether, and the shop you pick has no bearing on it. If someone was injured, the call is 911 while you are still at the scene. If nobody was hurt but the damage across both cars probably tops the provincial reporting threshold, or the other driver drove off, you report it in person at the nearest Collision Reporting Centre, usually within 24 hours.
An Intact Service Centre is a drop-off counter with a Rely Network shop doing the repair
Intact describes its Service Centre model in a fixed order. You report the claim to an Intact adjuster, and the adjuster decides whether a Service Centre suits that particular claim. If it does, you drop the car off there and leave in a rental arranged on the spot. The repair itself is done by a shop in the Rely Network, and you collect the car back at the Service Centre when it is finished.
The Rely Network is Intact’s group of vetted partner shops that hold service agreements with the company. Intact guarantees Rely Network auto repairs for as long as you own the vehicle. That guarantee is the strongest argument for the network route, and it is worth reading closely: it is tied to work done inside the network, so it does not travel with your car to a shop outside it.
None of this is compulsory. Intact’s own claims guidance says it may recommend a Service Centre or a Rely shop and that you can choose an independent shop you trust instead. That matches Ontario practice generally: an insurance company can recommend, it cannot require.
Choosing an independent shop on an Intact claim takes one sentence to the adjuster
Tell the adjuster where the car is going and give the shop the claim number. At Crash Consultant that means the shop writes its own estimate, sends it with photos to Intact, and the adjuster reviews it. The shop is not part of the Rely Network and is not an Intact Service Centre, so the repair is covered by the shop’s own written warranty on paint and refinish rather than by Intact’s network guarantee.
What does not change: your deductible, your coverage, and the fault decision, which comes from Ontario’s Fault Determination Rules whoever fixes the car. Intact still decides what the covered repair is worth, and an outside estimate is reviewed line by line instead of accepted automatically. Where the two numbers differ, the shop and the adjuster settle the lines between themselves, and you are brought in only when a decision is genuinely yours.
A practical point for drivers near the 404: in Ontario you decide where your car is towed. If it can still be driven, there is no need to accept a tow to wherever the first phone call suggested; drive it, or have it towed, to the shop you named. Moving a car after teardown is far more awkward than sending it to the right place the first time.
The guided photos in the Intact app estimate the damage, and the teardown finishes the job
The app includes a guided picture module that walks you through roughly ten damage photos, and Intact uses them to estimate the damage. That is a useful start, especially for a scuffed door or a single dented panel. A front or rear corner is different: the bumper cover flexes back into shape and hides the absorber, the brackets and sometimes a sensor mount behind it.
So expect the photo figure to change after teardown. When the shop finds a cracked bracket that no photo could show, it goes to Intact as a supplement with pictures of the broken part. That is a routine step in any claim, and it is the main reason the photo estimate should be treated as a first draft.
Take the guided photos in daylight if you can. A dim parking level at Fairview Mall flattens a crease so it barely shows, while the same panel outside on Sheppard in afternoon light shows the full shape of the dent.
Your rental on an Intact claim comes from your coverage, whichever shop you pick
At a Service Centre the rental is handed over at drop-off, which is part of the appeal. At an independent shop the rental is still there, it is just booked through your coverage rather than at the counter. In Ontario that coverage is usually OPCF 20, Coverage for Transportation Replacement, which reimburses a similar rental, taxis or transit up to a per-day and a per-occurrence limit once the damage exceeds the deductible. A not-at-fault collision can also bring a rental through the claim itself.
Because OPCF 20 has a ceiling, the timing matters more than the location. Ask the shop to schedule the drop-off for when the ordered parts have arrived, so the covered rental days go to repair work rather than to a car parked waiting for a delivery. If you commute by Line 4 from Don Mills station anyway, ask the adjuster how transit fares are reimbursed under your form before assuming you need a rental at all.
Questions people ask
Does Intact’s lifetime guarantee cover a repair done at an independent shop?
No. Intact’s guarantee is limited to repairs by its Rely Network shops. An independent shop stands behind its work with a warranty of its own, so ask for that in writing and check what it covers before the car goes in.
I already sent the guided photos through the Intact app. Can I still choose my own shop?
Yes. The photos help Intact estimate the damage; they do not commit you to a Service Centre. Tell the adjuster the shop you have chosen and pass that shop the claim number.
My broker sold me the Intact policy. Should the broker open the claim or should I?
Either works. Many drivers let the broker report it; others use the app. The claim ends up with an Intact adjuster and a claim number in both cases, and that number is what the shop needs.
Is a belairdirect claim the same as an Intact claim?
They share a parent company, but belairdirect is sold directly rather than through brokers and has its own app and process, so it has its own page on this site.
