Guide · Ceramic coating

When can you put a ceramic coating on fresh body shop paint?

A coating has to wait until the refinish stops gassing out

A ceramic coating is a hard, thin, glass-like layer that bonds to paint and is designed to keep things out. Fresh refinish paint is still releasing solvent and still hardening for weeks after the bake, so a coating applied too soon traps exactly what the new film needs to let go of.

The damage shows up later and is awkward to undo: dull or cloudy patches, gloss that never comes up fully, sometimes a tender spot where the clear stays soft under the coating. Because the coating is built to resist chemicals and abrasion, getting it off again means machine polishing, which takes some of the new clear with it.

No single waiting period fits every job. It depends on the clear and hardener used, how many panels were sprayed, how heavy the film is, and the temperature the car lives in afterward. We give a date for the specific panels at pickup. Coating manufacturers also publish a minimum paint age in their application instructions, and a careful installer will ask how old the paint is before starting. Work to the later of the two dates.

Blended panels lose their coating where the new colour is faded in

Any panel that gets blended loses its coating across the blend area, and panels beyond that keep theirs. The repaired section then sits between coated neighbours with a bare surface until it is coated too.

A blend fades new colour and clear part of the way across the neighbouring panel, so the eye never finds a hard edge. For new material to grip, the blend area has to be scuffed. A coating is precisely the kind of slick, chemical-resistant surface that fresh paint refuses to stick to, and leftover coating can cause fisheyes, small craters where wet paint pulls away from a contaminated spot. So the coating is compounded off the blend area first, and the surface is cleaned until water and solvent wet it evenly.

Tell us at the estimate that the car is coated, and if you know it, which product and when it went on. It changes the preparation on the blend panels, it can add labour to the estimate, and it explains why a fender that was never damaged comes back without the beading you are used to.

  • Repaired panel: refinished bare and coated later, once cured
  • Blend panel: coating polished off where colour is faded in, then refinished across that zone
  • Panels past the blend: coating left untouched and masked during spraying
  • Glass, trim and wheels: whatever coating they carry is not disturbed

Water will bead differently on the repaired side for a few weeks

Until the new panels are coated, rain sheets and beads on them differently than on the coated panels beside them. That is surface chemistry, not a colour problem, and it evens out once the whole car carries the same layer again.

Drive home through a downpour on the 404 the week after pickup and you may notice the repaired door holding water flat while the fender next to it throws tight round beads. Under some light the bare panel can also look a touch less slick. Neither means the paint is off. Judge colour on a dry car, in daylight, from a few steps back.

In the meantime, hand wash with a gentle, pH-neutral shampoo and a clean wash mitt, and stay out of brush washes. Many installers sell a maintenance spray for their coating; ask whether it is safe on uncured paint before using it on the new panels.

A coating is too thin to hide a chip or stop a stone

A ceramic coating is measured in microns. It adds gloss, makes washing easier and resists chemical etching, but it offers no meaningful impact protection and cannot fill or disguise damage already in the paint.

That matters on GTA highways. Gravel trucks and leftover winter sand on the shoulders of the 401 and the 404 throw stones that go straight through a coating and the clear underneath. If chips on the hood and bumper are what you want to prevent, paint protection film is the product built for it, and a coating can go on over the film afterward.

A coating also magnifies what lies beneath it. Extra gloss makes swirl marks, sanding scratches and dust nibs easier to see. That is one reason to coat only after the refinish has been polished and accepted, and a reason never to coat old paint without correcting it first: the coating locks in the condition of the surface on the day it goes on.

Planning a coating around a Toronto winter, a claim and two warranties

If the repair finishes in late fall, the coating may have to wait for spring or go on indoors in a heated bay. Most coating products list a temperature and humidity range for application and curing, and an unheated driveway in December falls outside it.

That leaves the new paint bare through one salt season. Once cured it will cope, provided the brine is rinsed off regularly in a touchless wash and nothing sealing goes on early. Fully cured refinish paint copes with a winter on its own; it simply goes without the extra layer until spring.

On a claim, tell your insurance company the car was coated when you report the collision, and keep the installer’s invoice. Whether restoring the coating on the repaired panels is paid is the adjuster’s decision under your policy, so ask rather than assume. If the coating has its own warranty, read the installer’s terms, since some require that installer to recoat repaired panels to keep it valid. The lifetime warranty on our paint and refinish applies to the work we did; clouding caused by a coating laid over paint that had not cured is a different matter, which is one more reason to wait for the date.

Questions people ask

Can I use a spray sealant or quick detailer on the new paint while I wait?

Skip anything sold as a sealant, coating or wax until the cure date. A gentle rinse and a hand wash with plain pH-neutral soap are all the repaired panels need. If a bottle claims to be safe on fresh paint, check with us before trusting the label.

Will the coating installer need to polish my new paint first?

Usually lightly, and that is normal. Installers prepare every panel before coating, and on fresh refinish the step mostly removes handling marks from reassembly. Tell them the panel is new so they choose a soft pad and remove no more clear than necessary.

My car was coated two years ago. Recoat everything or only the repaired panels?

Either works. Coating only the new and blended panels is quicker, but a two-year-old coating elsewhere may already be wearing, so the repaired side can end up behaving better than the rest. Plenty of owners use the repair as the moment to strip and recoat the whole car once.
